Century in both the innings by Pankaj Roy and a match haul of 11 wickets for 72 runs by Subhassh Chandra Gupte enabled Bengal crush Orissa by 540 runs in their three-day East Zone Ranji Trophy match, held at Barabati Stadium in Cuttack from 11 to 14 December, 1953.
Roy slammed 170 in the first innings and 143 in the second. Gupte bagged six wickets in the first innings and five in the second. Bengal wicket-keeper Probir Kumar Sen also scored a century in the first innings.
Lalat Indu Parija led Orissa for the first time, replacing Banabasi Patnaik. As many as three players made their first-class debut for Orissa. They were: B Tripathy, MS Ananthaswamy Rao and Suresh Mohapatra.
B Tripathy also made his last first-class appearance as did wicket-keeper Nabhi Ramamurthy and RJ le Faucheur. In the second innings of Orissa, Ramamurthy and captain Parija remained absent hurt.
